The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is threatened by development on all sides. This is a vulnerable landscape which can so easily be damaged by human actions.
Together, we must act and turn our Chilterns AONB into a National Park to preserve its unique beauty for future generations.
Set up in 1965, the AONB covers more than 300 square miles. Two of the world's most rare and fragile environments – chalk grassland and chalk streams – are found within it.
We have lost more than 80% of England's chalk grassland since 1945. 85% of all chalk streams on earth are found in England, making the Chess and the Misbourne of global scientific significance! 20% of the AONB is wooded – double the national average.
2 million people live within 10km of the Chilterns AONB and Events like the Chilterns Walking Festival - a programme of 80 events between 19 May and 3 June - demonstrate how much people enjoy the chance to explore this unique place.
Over 50 years since it was founded, now is the right time to review whether the Chiltern AONB should be upgraded to National Park status. There is a precedent - the South Downs AONB became the South Downs National Park in 2010.
This is the moment to take action to leave our environment in a better state than we found it.
